Day Trips from Munich - 6 Tips
Advertorial | Eastern Bavaria or Upper Bavaria? Franconia or Allgäu and Bavarian Swabia? The foothills of the Alps in Upper Bavaria are characterised by Lake Ammersee, Lake Starnberger See, Lake Tegernsee and Lake Chiemsee. In the north, Upper Bavaria extends to the Altmühl Valley. The main rivers are the Danube, Lech, Isar, Inn and Salzach.
Franconia dominates the north of Bavaria, with the Main and Regnitz rivers, low mountain ranges such as the Hassberge, Frankenwald, Fichtelgebirge, Spessart and Rhön, and cities such as Nuremberg, Würzburg and Bayreuth. Allgäu/Bavarian Swabia is Bavaria's outpost in the south-west.
The Allgäu stretches from Lake Constance in the west to the Lech River in the east, from Memmingen to the Alps at Oberstdorf. Bavarian Swabia stretches from the Nördlinger Ries through the river valleys around the Danube to the foothills of the Alps.
Eastern Bavaria boasts the largest forest area in Europe, the Bavarian Forest. The Upper Palatinate Forest stretches across the neighbouring region. Mediterranean karst landscapes are found in the Bavarian Jura between Sulzbach-Rosenberg and Kelheim. The wide Danube plain and hilly grasslands characterise the region between Regensburg and Passau.
Prien at Lake Chiemsee
The breathtaking lakeside vista of Chiemsee framed by towering Alpine mountains – that can only be Prien am Chiemsee. Prien am Chiemsee offers visitors a truly unique combination of lake life, mountains, nature and culture. The Chiemsee-Region is known as “the Bavarian seaside”, and there is a whole host of different ways to spend a happy holiday in this beautiful part of Germany.
Prien’s townscape is particularly picturesque by virtue of its traditional Upper Bavarian style. Many of the town’s houses and shop fronts are decorated with exquisite frescoes. The harbor at Prien/Stock offers year-round boat connections to the islands of Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee all year round.

Trip to the World's Longest Castle
The "River Salzach Pearl" Burghausen, 100 kilometres from Munich, attracts visitors with the world's longest castle. Walls, battlements and towers stretch for over a kilometre. The castle between Lake Wöhrsee and Salzach River is the centrepiece of a visit to Burghausen. The viewing platform on the roof of the main castle offers an overwhelming panoramic view of the town. Tour guides in historical costumes tell you about life in the castle. You can actively experience the Middle Ages by jousting in a virtual jousting tournament.
In summer, the Salzach-town sounds and swings: at "Jazz am Bichl" every Thursday with live music from 7 pm and at the "summer music on Wasserplatz square" every Sunday from 5 pm.
Lake Wöhrsee below the castle is the perfect place to cool off. Glide gently through the Salzach Valley on a boat trip. Active holidaymakers can hike to Raitenhaslach Monastery, visit the Salzach Gorge or let off steam in the bike and skate park. Cycling tours for every level of fitness await in the certified Inn-Salzach Cycle-Travel-Region.
