Berchtesgaden Salt Mine

In the middle of the Berchtesgaden Alps lies the well-known and traditional salt mine. Salt mining began there in 1517 and continues to this day. The proud five hundred year history of the mine is told to visitors during exciting guided tours in the depths – a unique adventure for parents and children!

Berchtesgaden Salt Mine

SPONSORED STORY Immerse yourself in the world of salt and experience mining in the depths of the Alps! Fascinating tours lead visitors through the interior of the Berchtesgaden Salt Mountain. Salt was and still is extracted there by dissolving salt from the rock with water. The salt water, the brine, is then piped over twenty kilometres to Bad Reichenhall and processed into salt.

Descending into the depths on wooden slides!

You first take the mine train 650 metres into the mountain. Then you whiz down the first wooden slide into the Salt Cathedral, a huge hollow space. The salt crystal structures on the walls are a projection surface for an extraordinary light show.

In another room, a three-dimensional model and a film provide information about salt mining. This is followed by the Magic Salt Room, where a video show focuses on the role of salt in life, the region and the miners.

A second slide takes you down another forty metres to the mirror lake with its fantastic light shows. A raft trip takes you across the lake. An inclined lift finally takes you back to the mine train for the exit.
