From Neu-Ulm to Marxheim. The path goes through Günzburg, Gundelfingen, Lauingen, Dillingen, Höchstädt and Donauwörth, with broad stretches of alluvial forest and meadowland in between. Length: 110 kilometres.

The Konstanzer Ach flows through the largest natural lake of Allgäu, west of Immenstadt. It is surrounded by meadows, woods and mountains. The lake offers good windsurfing and sailing conditions and outstanding bathing. (only in German)

The Romantic Road

This holiday route runs through Allgäu/Bavarian Swabia past the Nördlinger Ries and the famous Harburg castle complex to the Fugger dynasty city of Augsburg.

For a special experience, it’s well worth taking a trip on the historic boats “Hohentwiel” (a paddle steamer) and “Österreich” (an art deco boat).

Allgäu cycle circuit

Out and about on a four-star long-distance cycle path: The Radrunde Allgäu. Explore the nature of the Allgäu on a 475 km route and cycle through six districts in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and the Tyrol. This extensive network of paths offers standard signposting. It runs primarily on asphalt, and frequently along disused railway tracks with no cars.

The Association of Allgäu Outdoor Enterprises (VAO) was set up to combine eco-friendly activity with high quality standards: canyoning tours, rafting, forest rope parks, mountain biking and more. (only in German)

The Way of St. James

The Bavarian Swabian Way of St. James forms part of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. For around 150 km it passes through Bavarian Swabia - from Ries through the Lech plains and on two different routes on into the Allgäu. (only in German)

Upper Swabian Baroque Route

The Upper Swabian Baroque Route (Oberschwäbische Barockstraße) was created in 1966 as one of the first culture and holiday routes. It encompasses monasteries, abbeys and churches, castles and aristocratic residences as well as beautiful scenery. The eastern route also connects Bavarian towns such as Memmingen, Ottobeuren and Kempten.

Listening tours in Bavarian Swabia

An audioguide app on your smartphone provides background information on geology, biology, architecture, history and customs. It is available for 20 places, ranging from a tour of Günzburg to “WasSerleben” in Augsburg. Free, and with iOS also Android-compatible. (only in German)

“From the Alps to Lake Constance”, this signposted route meanders through the landscape between Oberstaufen, Scheidegg and Lindau. It represents a network of producers and marketers of quality agricultural products featuring twelve Alpine pasture dairies and five farm-based cheese dairies. The 150 km route has seven selected stages – which can be done on two wheels, four wheels or on foot.
