Holiday inspiration "Country of origin of beer"
Destination Kelheim
Description
For centuries, tasty beer has been brewed in the region according to the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot, a law about which ingredients are allowed to be brewed into Bavarian beers. In the holiday region around Kelheim, these ingredients grow basically right on our doorstep: The hop cones thrive in the Hallertau hop gardens. High-quality brewing barley grows on the Jura heights of the Altmühltal. And spring water flows from the Jura karst rock. The tradition of beer brewing goes back a long way, because as early as 1050, monks at Weltenburg Abbey were brewing their “liquid bread”. After a boat trip through the impressive Danube Gorge, try the aromatic taste of the multi-award-winning Weltenburger Barock Dunkel in the shady beer garden of the monastery complex.
The Schneider family from Essing has also been brewing beer for generations. In their show brewery, guests can brew their own beer, stay overnight in the beer hotel, or simply enjoy the Bavarian cuisine in the beer garden. You will discover that beer is not just beer at a beer sommelier evening at the Schwan Inn & Hotel in Riedenburg. A cosy and rustic feeling permeate the nearby Fasslwirtschaft Restaurant with the Crystal Museum and mini golf course. There are huge, ancient wooden beer barrels in the guest room and you have a choice of 42 different types of beer on the drinks menu. Embark on a culinary journey and enjoy the picturesque landscape of the Altmühltal. Excursion tip: The hop farms of the hop ambassadors Elisabeth Stiglmaier and Marlene Zellner are located only around 50 km away from the Altmühltal. You will learn in an entertaining and descriptive way how hops are cultivated, cared for, and harvested.
