The Weltenburg Tour by Boat and Handbike

The Kelheim vacation region offers a wide range of opportunities for unforgettable handbike adventures: In the Altmühl Valley, the route follows the Main-Danube Canal with few steep inclines; the hilly Hallertau region offers challenges for more athletic riders; and on the Five Rivers Bike Trail, you’ll spend several days cycling between the cities of Nuremberg, Amberg, Regensburg, Kelheim, and Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate.

A special recommendation is the 36-kilometer Weltenburg Tour. It’s a loop route that takes you from Kelheim to Abensberg and back again. Highlights along the route include Kelheim, the city of the Wittelsbach dynasty; a boat ride through the famous Danube Gorge, with its cliffs rising up to 70 meters above the water; Weltenburg Abbey; and the historic district of Abensberg with its city museum.

It is important to note that the Weltenburg tour is only suitable for handbike riders from mid-March through early November, in combination with the boat trip from Kelheim to Weltenburg. Therefore, please be sure to check the boat schedules. Depending on high or low water levels on the Danube, the boats may not be able to operate. Getting There and Local Transportation

In general, we recommend traveling by car. If you’re traveling by train, you’ll need to transfer to local public transportation at the Saal an der Donau station and continue on to Kelheim. Alternatively, the taxi company MH Taxi Kelheim offers wheelchair-accessible transportation.

Parking spaces for people with disabilities:

• In Kelheim, there are six parking spaces for people with disabilities in the P4 Donauvorland parking lot, located directly in front of the boat ticket office. Alternatively, you can park in the nearby Pflegerspitz P3 large parking lot.

• The parking lot in Weltenburg is approximately 850 meters from the monastery. A paved, traffic-calmed road leads to the monastery. For overnight guests staying at the St. Georg Guesthouse, parking spaces are available directly at the monastery.

• In Abensberg, there are two parking spaces for people with disabilities at Aventinusplatz. Otherwise, you can park at the large Gillamooswiese parking lot. However, the path from the large parking lot to the old town is uphill.
