Description

The landscape in the Altmühltal Nature Park with its bizarre rock formations, Mediterranean-style juniper heaths, medieval castles, and romantic cities seems like something out of a picture book. Visit the 34 goddesses of victory in the Hall of Liberation in Kelheim and enjoy the magnificent view from where it rises up high above the city. From Kelheim, you follow the Main-Danube Canal to the idyllic market town of Essing. The houses in the small town are nestled romantically in the steep cliffside and the nearby Tatzlwurm, one of the longest wooden bridges in Europe, sways over the canal like a dragon – it is without question one of the most beautiful photo motifs in the Altmühltal!

In the Three-Castle-City Riedenburg, the largest rock crystal group around the world awaits you in the Crystal Museum Riedenburg. A boat trip between Kelheim, Riedenburg, and Essing is also unforgettable. Go aboard and let the Altmühltal pass you by in peace and quiet. Arrival and mobility:

In general, we recommend traveling to the Altmühltal by car. When arriving by train, it is necessary to change to local public transport from Saal an der Donau train station. Alternatively, the taxi company MH Taxi Kelheim offers wheelchair transport and stretcher van transport.

There is good local public transportation between Kelheim, Essing, and Riedenburg. From May 1st to October 3rd, special bus lines with bike trailers are available on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays in addition to local public transport. All special buses are low floor buses.

There are well-developed cycle paths along the Main-Danube Canal without major climbs.
