Holiday inspiration "Die Babonenstadt Abensberg"

Destiantion Kelheim

Description

The eventful history of Abensberg reaches as far back as the Middle Ages. Back then, the city was surrounded by a mighty city wall with eight corner towers and 32 round towers. The founder of the city, Count Babo from the Babonen dynasty, is said to have had 32 sons and 8 daughters, for whom he had the towers built. Parts of the medieval city wall are still preserved today. Magnificent town houses line the squares of the historic old town and are the backdrop for the lively hustle and bustle in the cafés, restaurants, and inns. When strolling through the narrow alleys, the most striking tower in Abensberg, the colourful Kuchlbauer Tower of the Kuchlbauer Wheat Beer Brewery, catches your eye again and again. It is the landmark of the brewery and was built according to plans by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Not far from Abensberg lies Rohr in Lower Bavaria with the Rohr Monastery. The monastery church is famous for its high altar by Egid Quirin Asam. Right next to the church is the family-run Sixt Inn with hotel and beer garden. Three generations are united under one roof and give their overnight guests lots of tips for excursions in the region.
