The Kelheim vacation region is located near the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg and offers a diverse mix of nature experiences and sightseeing. A great starting point for excursions is Kelheim’s historic old town: From here, you can take a boat either through the Danube Gorge to Weltenburg Abbey or on a “mini-cruise” into the Altmühl Valley as far as Riedenburg. The bike paths along the Main-Danube Canal are especially popular. They lead past numerous sights and picturesque towns without any major inclines.

South of Kelheim, the landscape changes; beyond the city walls of Abensberg, you can see the first hop gardens of the Hallertau region. Hops have been cultivated in the hilly Holledau—as the locals affectionately call their homeland—for more than 200 years. At the hop farm of a “hop ambassador,” you’ll learn about the daily work of a hop farmer. The health resort of Bad Gögging pampers you with its three natural remedies: “thermal mineral water, sulfur water, and natural mud.” The Romans built a state-run thermal bath here more than 2,000 years ago. Remains of the state baths as well as the former Abusina cohort fort (part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes) can still be admired today.

Getting There and Getting Around:

The Kelheim vacation region is located in the heart of Bavaria, near Ingolstadt (Ingolstadt–Kelheim: 50 km) and Regensburg (Regensburg–Kelheim: 30 km). The region is easily accessible by car via the A93 highway.

There are train stations in Abensberg (wheelchair accessible), Neustadt an der Donau, and Saal an der Donau (connections to Kelheim via local public transit).

From May 1 through October 3, recreational buses equipped with bike trailers are available on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays in addition to local public transit (ÖPNV). All recreational buses are low-floor buses:

• Line 6010 Altmühltal: Regensburg – Kelheim – Essing – Riedenburg – Dollnstein

• Line 6030 Hallertau: Kelheim – Bad Gögging – Abensberg – Mainburg – Freising

The Kelheim district also offers the KEXI on-demand bus service. This allows you to travel flexibly within the respective towns. There is neither a fixed schedule nor a fixed route. The on-demand bus collects ride requests within the desired time window, so that passengers with similar destinations can share a ride. All KEXI vehicles are accessible via a wheelchair ramp and can accommodate passengers in wheelchairs. Unfortunately, electric wheelchairs cannot be transported. Please notify us of your need for a wheelchair when you register.
