All areas relevant for testing meet the quality criteria of the label "Accessibility certified - partially accessible for people with walking disabilities and wheelchair users".

Some information on accessibility are listed below. For detailed information please see the evaluation report.

  • There are four marked parking spaces available for people with impairments (approx. 280 m).
  • The surface of the path from the car park / bus stop to the visitor centre and the "Jourhaus mit Lagertor" is easy to walk on.
  • The entrance "Jourhaus mit Lagertor" and the access to the visitor centre is threshold and step less. The visitor centre entrance door opens automatically (handle, light barrier, motion detector).
  • The height of the information and cash desks is 109 cm in the visitor centre and 92 cm in the literature shop. In the CID bookshop in the former maintenance building, the cash desk is 92 cm high at the lowest point. There are no communication possibilities while sitting.
  • All rooms raised that are available to the guest are accessible at ground level or via ramps (exceptions): Protestant Church of Reconciliation and Russian Orthodox Chapel only accessible via steps).
  • All passageways/doors are at least 90 cm wide (exception: Carmelite Convent with 85 cm door width and passageway in the exhibition Crematorium "Barracke X" narrower than 78 cm).
  • The exhibits in the exhibitions are mainly visible while standing and sitting.
  • The route of the tour for wheelchair users leads partly over moderately passable gravel paths. Easily passable paths: Bus stop - Visitor Centre - Jourhaus; outside paths in the areas of the dormitory building, camp prison, international memorial and administration entrance. Paths that are relatively easy to walk and drive on: Barracks East (along the main façade); Jourhaus - bridge to the crematorium area (west of the barracks).
  • There are tables in the bistro in the visitor centre that are wheelchair compatible.
  • Aids on offer: wheelchair, scooter
  • There is no tour offered for people with walking disabilities and wheelchair users.

Public toilet for people with disabilities in the visitor centre

  • The door to the toilet can be opened with a Euro key. The key is available at the information desk.
  • The manoeuvring space is as follows:
    • to the left and right of the toilet at least 90 cm x 70 cm,
    • in front of toilet, washbasin and door at least 150 cm x 150 cm.
  • Handles that can be folded up are available on both sides of the toilet.
  • The washbasin is wheelchair compatible and the mirror can be seen while standing or sitting.
  • An alarm trigger (cord) is available.

Public toilet for people with disabilities in the former maintenance building

  • The toilet can be opened with a Euro key. The door opens inwards, but does not affect the manoeuvring space.
  • The manoeuvring space is as follows:
    • to the left and right of the toilet at least 90 cm x 69 cm,
    • in front of toilet, washbasin and door at least 150 cm x 150 cm.
  • Handles that can be folded up are available on both sides of the toilet.
  • The washbasin is wheelchair compatible and the mirror can be seen while standing or sitting.
  • An alarm trigger (cord) is available.

  • Assistance dogs may be brought along.
  • Some of the outside paths have visually contrasting pavement boundaries.
  • The entrance areas "Jourhaus with camp gate", Visitor Centre, Carmel Monastery, former administration building / archive and crematorium "Barrack X" have visually contrasting designs. 
  • Signage is designed in legible, high-contrast lettering.
  • Operating elements are predominantly designed with high visual contrast.
  • Information on the exhibits is visually high-contrast.
  • There is a tactile model of the site with legends in Braille and profile writing and a more portable tactile map with explanations in Braille and audio format. 
  • Some information is available in Braille or prismatic script.
  • Technical aids: apps, audio guide.

  • There is an audio induction loop for audio guides at the counter in the visitor centre.
  • There is no visual alarm.
  • In the exhibitions and other areas information is available in written form.
  • There are tables with bright and glare-free lighting in the bistro in the visitor centre, where there are no lamps standing or hanging that interfere with the field of vision or eye contact. Areas with low background noises do not exist.
  • Technical possibility of information transfer: An "App in (German) sign language" is available to deaf visitors to the Dachau concentration camp memorial site at http://www.kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.de/gedenkstaetten-app-in-gebaerdensprache.html.
  • A tour for deaf people is offered in sign language, but not for people with hearing impairment. FM systems are available. Please book in advance.

  • Name and logo of the memorial are clearly recognizable from the outside.
  • The objective of the path is usually within sight or an uninterrupted guidance system is available.
  • There is information in plain language (website, tour brochure, apps in easy or simple language).
  • There is no menu in the bistro, the food is not presented visibly.
  • A tour for people with cognitive impairments is offered. The contents of the tour are easy to understand or are easily explained (e.g. pictorially). Please book in advance.
