Description

The Glentleiten open-air museum is the largest open-air museum in southern Bavaria. Visitors can expect more than 60 original preserved buildings, which give an insight into the rural everyday life of the people of Upper Bavaria. On the extensive grounds there are not only walk-in buildings but also gardens, forests and meadows based on the historical model of the cultural landscape. Some information on accessibility are listed below. For detailed information please see the evaluation report.

Arrival

  • There is a bus stop (name: bus stop "Schlehdorf-Glentleiten Freilichtmuseum - Großweil") of the local public transport in 30 m distance. 
  • There are 9 parking spaces for people with disabilities (space size: 350 cm x 500 cm).
  • The parking lot is 30 m away from the entrance.
  • The path between the parking lot as well as the bus stop and the entrance building is at least 200 cm wide and 30 m long. The surface of the path is low-vibration and easy to walk and drive on. There is a longitudinal slope of max. 6.6 % over 10 m.

Main / entrance building (ticket office, special exhibition area, catering)

  • The entrance building is step-free (max. 2 cm threshold, if necessary via a ramp). Doors are at least 92 cm wide.
  • The cash counter is 75 cm high at the lowest point. 
  • The exhibits in the special exhibition area are predominantly visible, perceptible and recognizable while seated. The information on the exhibits is predominantly legible while seated.
  • Aids: Rollator, wheelchair, wheelchairs with electric braking and pushing assistance can be borrowed.

Exterior paths / paths within the grounds

  • The grounds are accessible without steps. 
  • The main paths are 200 cm wide and some of them are not easy to walk or drive on.
  • The accesses to some houses are partly only 80 cm wide and lead over gravel/meadow paths. 
  • The terrain is hilly, so there are always inclines / declines of up to max. 13% to overcome.

Other buildings and exhibition areas

  • There are door thresholds of up to 22 cm or steps in some buildings. 
  • In the buildings, the upper floors are only accessible via stairs. 
  • The courtyard from Kochel is accessible via wooden planks over a length of 5 m with a gradient of 13 % over a length of 10 m. 
  • The Kleinanwesen building from Grünwald ("House to Discover") is accessible via the gateway with a slope of 27% over 5 m via wooden planks.
  • The exhibits are mainly visible, perceptible and recognizable while sitting. 
  • The information on the exhibits can be read mainly while sitting.

Guided tours

  • Guided tours are offered for people with walking disabilities and wheelchair users.
  • Pre-registration for the guided tour is required. 
  • Mobile or fixed seating is available for people with walking disabilities to use during the tour. 

Glentleiter Wirtschaft & Brauerei (entrance building, upper floor).

  • The restaurant area is accessible without steps or via an elevator. 
  • Doors are at least 90 cm wide.
  • The elevator car is 106 cm x 138 cm. There is a horizontal control panel. 
  • There are wheelchair-accessible tables. 

Public toilet (entrance building, on the first floor). 

  • The door is at least 95 cm wide.
  • The access is step-free.
  • The manoeuvring spaces are:  
    in front of the washbasin 178 cm x 200 cm;
    in front of the toilet 200 cm x 178 cm;
    to the left of the toilet149 cm x 70 cm;
    to the right of the toilet151 cm x 70 cm.
  • There are grab rails to the left and right of the toilet.
  • Both grab rails can be flipped-up. 
  • The sink is wheelchair compatible. 
  • The mirror can be seen while standing or sitting. 
  • There is a cord as an alarm trigger.

Public toilet (Building 21)

  • The door is at least 94 cm wide.
  • There is a door threshold with a height of 3 cm.
  • The manoeuvring spaces are:  
    in front of the sink 192 cm x 188 cm;
    in front of the toilet 188 cm x 192 cm;
    to the left of the toilet 98 cm x 69 cm;
    to the right of the toilet  102 cm x 69 cm.
  • There are grab rails to the left and right of the toilet.
  • Both handholds can be folded up. 
  • The sink has limited access. 
  • The mirror can be seen while standing or sitting.

  • There is a bus stop (name: bus stop "Schlehdorf-Glentleiten Freilichtmuseum - Großweil") of local transport in 30 m. 
  • There are 9 parking spaces for people with disabilities (space size: 350 cm x 500 cm) 30 m from the entrance.
  • Assistance dogs (companion dogs, guide dogs for the blind, etc.) may be brought into all relevant areas/rooms of the facility/offerings 
  • There are no visually contrasting or tactile floor indicators indoors or outdoors. The sidewalk perimeter of the main walkways are predominantly tactile detectable and visually contrasting.
  • The entrance area of the main building is identifiable by a tactilely perceptible change of flooring and visually contrasting with the surroundings.
  • In the elevator of the main building, an outgoing emergency call is confirmed acoustically, e.g., by an intercom system. Alternatively, stairs are available.
  • The entrance areas of other buildings are partially recognizable by a tactilely perceptible change of flooring and partially visually contrasting with the surroundings. 
  • A tactile model of the museum grounds and a digital media table are available in the foyer.
  • Building 21 - the "House to Feel, Hear and Grasp" - houses an inclusive presentation for people with visual impairments and blind people. There are listening stations in each room, all lettering/text panels in dot and pyramid font, and many tactile elements. The upper floor is only accessible via a steep staircase.
  • In some of the other exhibit areas, there is a visual contrast between the exhibits and the surroundings. For the most part, the exhibits are well lit. Exhibit signage is predominantly visually contrasting. 
  • Guided tours are offered for people with visual impairments and for blind people. 
  • Pre-registration for the guided tour is required.

  • In the elevator of the main building (catering area), an outgoing emergency call in the elevator is confirmed acoustically but not visually. Alternatively, stairs are available.
  • Information about exhibits is provided primarily in writing.
  • Guided tours are offered for people with hearing disabilities and for deaf people in German sign language. 
  • Pre-registration for the guided tour is required. 
  • The tour guides are trained to conduct a tour for deaf people in German Sign Language (DGS).

  • In the catering areas, there are tables with bright and glare-free lighting, where there are no lamps or hanging lamps that interfere with the field of vision or eye contact.
