Description
The tourist information centre is located on the ground floor of the building. In addition to a large selection of flyers and maps, you can get personalised advice on excursion tips, hiking tours and accommodation options on request. Right next door is the café with a panoramic view of hills of the Dammersfeldrhoen and an outdoor area. Drinks, coffee and hot soups are on offer.
There is also a regional shop on the ground floor. Typical Rhön products are offered for sale here. These range from spreads (Rhön honey, jams, home-made sausages) to pasta and drinks. All products on offer bear the Rhön seal of quality.
Exhibition
- On the first floor there is a permanent exhibition focussing on the following topics:
- The origin of the Rhön
- History of settlement
- Special features and interesting facts about the natural landscape
- From the natural landscape to the cultural landscape
- Regional products and inventions
- Lighthouse projects in the Rhön, such as premium hiking trails, Rhön sheep and the star park
Children have the opportunity to combine the exhibition with a quiz. They will receive a small surprise when they hand in the quiz at the tourist information centre.
Events
The Rhön Biosphere Centre "House of the Black Mountains" also offers an extensive programme of events. The media and lecture room offers the opportunity to take part in various lectures and seminars. Further information on events can be found in the events calendar.

- There is a bus stop 80 metres away.
- There is a car park for people with disabilities. A parking space is at least 268 cm wide and 500 cm long.
- The car park is 20 m from the entrance.
- The entrance/access to the building is stepless or accessible via a lift.
- All rooms and facilities that can be used by the guest and are elevated are steplessly accessible.
- The lift cabin is 100 cm x 145 cm.
- Passages and doors are at least 90 cm wide.
- The information and ticket counter is 115 cm high at its lowest point.
- The exhibits are mainly visible, perceptible or recognisable when seated.
- The information on the exhibits can mainly be read while seated.
- It is necessary to book in advance for the tour. The entire route of the tour is steplessly accessible for wheelchair users.
- Mobile or fixed seating is available for people with walking disabilities, which can be used during the tour.
Public toilet
- The manoeuvring spaces are:
in front of the sink 200 cm x 195 cm;
in front of the toilet 190 cm x 200 cm;
to the left of the toilet 110 cm x 70 cm;
55 cm x 70 cm to the right of the toilet. - There are grab rails to the left and right of the toilet.
- The grab rails can be flipped-up.
- The sink is wheelchair compatible.
- The mirror can be seen while standing or sitting.
- An alarm trigger is available.

- Assistance dogs (guide dogs, guide dogs for the blind, etc.) may be brought into all relevant areas/rooms of the establishment/provision.
- There are glass doors that have no safety markings at a height of 40-70 cm and 120-160 cm.
- The entrance area is recognisable by a tactile change of floor covering and visually contrasted with the surroundings.
- There are no floor indicators in the indoor or outdoor areas.
- All elevated areas that can be used by guests (entrance area, cash desk/counter, bedrooms, corridors, hallways) are well lit, i.e. bright and glare-free.
- There are stairs that are not high-contrast. Stairs have a handrail on at least one side.
- An outgoing emergency call in the lift is confirmed acoustically, e.g. by an intercom system.
- The exhibits are generally well lit.
- The exhibit labelling is visually rich in contrast
- There is acoustic information about the exhibits.
- In the catering area, there is a menu in plain, high-contrast lettering. There is a menu in large print.
- The following aids are available: Reading aids (reading glasses, magnifying glasses etc.)
